British shoe designer Victoria Spruce has pushed the boundaries of fashion design thanks to help from rapid prototyping and tooling services provider CRDM.
By using stereolithography (SLA) she was able to create unusual shapes and designs, then hand-finish her collection by fitting leather to the ‘printed’ shoe base – a new production method for the fashion industry. Ms Spruce’s critically acclaimed collection was recently exhibited at Selfridges, one of London’s leading department stores, alongside a video of the shoes being made by CRDM using a CAD file to cure epoxy resin, building the shoe layer by layer, to demonstrate the process and raise awareness of the creative possibilities it can offer to those unfamiliar with the rapid prototyping industry.
